Neufeld Society

What is it?

The Neufeld Society is a society of orthopedic surgeons within the School of Medicine Alumni Association dedicated to the memory of Alonzo J. Neufeld (LLUSM Class of 1935)—instructor, inventor and inspirer of many physicians. Membership in the Neufeld Society ensures the continuation of excellence among orthopedic surgeons.

The Neufeld Society exists to support and promote academic inquisitiveness and excellence. Neufeld, an inspiring teacher and orthopedic pioneer, spent hours experimenting in his garage-turned-lab, inventing different types of internal fixation and traction devices. His goal was to develop better orthopedic treatment for patients. When Loma Linda University Medical Center orthopedic residency graduates gathered at a reunion dinner in 1986, they decided to form a society to allow them to remain close to each other and to carry on what Neufeld started.

The Neufeld Society exists to:

1. Interchange information among its members in order to aid in the practice and further development of orthopedic surgery.
2. Pursue and accomplish orthopedic research.
3. Establish a Neufeld Research Foundation.
4. Support the Alonzo Neufeld Research Professorial Chair in orthopedic surgery.
5. Encourage continuing contact among the graduates of the programs and to foster fellowship.
