MISSION SUPPORT

From the very beginning of Loma Linda University, back when it was called the College of Medical Evangelists no less, taking the medical knowledge and skills acquired here to other parts of the world where needs are found has been an integral part of the overall mission. We hope you, as a student here, would consider spending some time abroad to serve in a foreign field yourself, and we would like to help you get there. Find out more on how we can help compensate for some of the costs of travel.

Senior Mission Elective

Senior medical students going on a mission elective for 4 weeks or more are eligible to receive funding from the Alumni Association’s Med 1977 Senior Medical Student Mission Elective Fund.* If you are a senior, we will reimburse you 50% of what the LLUSM reimburses you for your mission elective (currently the School of Medicine pays 50% of airfare, up to a maximum of $750.00), plus an additional amount of up to $150.00 is available from the Alumni Association’s Student Affairs Council Student Fund.

To receive funding after returning from your mission elective, complete the application form below, or email cwieder@llu.edu with the following information:

  1. A copy of the LLU School of Medicine reimbursement verification (e.g. the portion of your Student Expense Report that lists the amount you received from the School of Medicine) or a copy of the SM check with your name.
  2. Three (3) photos of your mission site activities
  3. 600 – 800 word article about your mission experience. Here are some points to consider when writing your article: What was your experience like and how did it impact you? Was there a specific incident and/or lessons learned from your mission experience? Has your perspective about anything changed? Do you think it is important to do missions?

Once we receive the mission trip photos, personal reflection, and the LLUSM reimbursement verification, we will issue you a check and email you when it is ready to be picked up. Photos and the personal reflection may be included in the ALUMNI JOURNAL and other Alumni Association material.

*Students participating in the Whole Person Care Preceptorship or any SM approved trip that is not for missions are not eligible to receive mission trip funding from the Alumni Association’s Med 1977 Senior Medical Student Mission Elective Fund but are eligible to receive up to $150.00 from the Student Affairs Council Student Fund.

Mission Electives or Trips Less Than 4 Weeks

Limited funds are available to assist students going on mission trips/electives that are less than 4 weeks in length and not eligible for School of Medicine funding. Mission trips/electives are considered those in underserved areas. In keeping with the School of Medicine policy, trips to developed countries such as Europe, Australia, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore will not usually be reimbursed. Students are required to indicate if the country they are traveling to is their home country. They must also demonstrate how their requested trip/elective qualifies as a mission trip/elective and not just an educational enrichment trip or elective. If approved, students will be reimbursed up to $150/week from alumni donations. A copy of the flight itinerary and cost should be submitted to cwieder@llu.edu along with photos and a personal reflection as stated above.
