Dr. Wertz passed away June 2, 2017

September 22, 1953 – June 2, 2017

Rodney Arthur Wertz ’76-B, 63, of Wolfforth, Texas, died on June 2, 2017. Doctor Wertz was born in Lebanon, Oregon on September 22, 1953. He graduated from the San Diego Adventist Academy and after two years of college at the La Sierra Campus of Loma Linda University, he was accepted into Loma Linda Medical School, Loma Linda California. During his elective rotation and on May 16, 1976, Rodney married Mae Abdul-Karim Wertz, who came from Lebanon to further her education at Loma Linda University. After a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, he joined the teaching staff at the Medical School.  In 1989 Dr. Rodney Wertz accepted an invitation from Dr. Naidu Chekuru to join his Pulmonary practice in Lubbock, Texas.  Eventually, all pulmonary doctors in Lubbock consolidated into one group, Lubbock Pulmonary Associates. Dr. Rodney Wertz served his patients and practiced Pulmonary Care for 36 years.

In teaching and in caring for his patients, Dr. Wertz applied his inherited and cultivated talents for the advancement of patient care. He was dedicated to his profession; and stated many times, “If I was to do it all over again, Pulmonary and Critical Care would be my choice.” In the words of Dr. Naidu Chekuru, “Rodney Wertz was a gifted Pulmonary Physician and our community benefited from his immense knowledge and the superb skills he brought to Lubbock, TX.” Dr. Rodney Wertz served the community of Lubbock since 1989.

Dr. Wertz is survived by his wife and three sons: Edward Wertz and his wife Kelsey Markham; Dr. Albert Wertz and his wife Janise Wertz; and Michael Wertz and his wife Genelle Wertz; and six grandchildren.  Dr. Wertz is also survived by his mother Charlyne Wertz of Loma Linda, CA; His brother Larry Wertz of Grand Terrace, CA; and two sisters: Joyce Harrington of Portland, Oregon and Sue Corydon of Calimesa, CA.  Dr. Wertz is preceded in death by his father Don Wertz.
