Walter C. Thompson ’61, formerly of New London, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2018, in Fitchburg. He was born on August 10, 1934, and raised on a farm in the Town of Mukwa (Waupaca County), son of the late Walter and Nellie (Mentzel) Thompson. Walter was united in marriage to Avonne Romaine Nottelson in Wittenberg. Walter graduated from Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI in 1957 and went on to graduate from Loma Linda University in 1961, as a medical and surgical doctor. He did his internship at Hinsdale Sanitarium and Hospital from 1961-1962 and post-graduate residency in general surgery at Loma Linda University hospital in Loma Linda, CA. Walter received his board certification from the American Board of Surgery in 1972 and Emergency Medicine in 1975. Walter traveled overseas to numerous countries doing mission work in general and surgical health and lecturing on preventive health. He was dedicated to international mission work, health education and also enjoyed writing. He was well published in numerous medical books. His other interests were gardening, stained glass work, carpentry, Bible studies, and radio and television ministry. 

Walter is survived by his wife, Avonne; son, Gregory; grandchildren, Andrew Thompson, Megan Thompson, Lori Macdonnell and Denyse Maquera; great-grandchildren, Liam Macdonnell, Jade Stephensen and Maiya Stephensen; brothers and sisters, Mabel Stedman, Elvin Thompson, Marion Young, Joseph R. Thompson and Rachel A. Farrell. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Cynthia Thompson.
