Dr. Sutherland passed away September 28, 2017

Dr. W. S. Sutherland, age 89, of Lawrenceburg, TN passed away Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville, KY. He was a native of Madison, TN, and a retired physician. Dr. Sutherland was a member of The Southern Medical Association, Lawrence County Medical Society, American Academy of Family Physicians, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Diplomate of National Board of Medical Examiners, and Seventh-day Adventist Church of Lawrenceburg.

Doc, as some of his neighbors called him, served in the U.S. Army as a Medical Technician in 1946 at the 49th General Hospital in Japan.

In 1950, he was a Laboratory and X-ray Technologist at Madison College and Hospital. In 1952, he received his BS degree from Southern College in Collegedale, TN. In 1957, he received his Medical Doctorate degree from Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. From 1957-1958, he interned at Orange County General Hospital in Orange, California.

Dr. Sutherland came to Lawrenceburg in December 1959 where he was associated with the old Lawrenceburg Sanitarium and Hospital that his grandfather helped found in 1911. He served as Chief of Staff and Administrator of the old hospital. He also served as Chief of Staff and on various committees for Scott Memorial Hospital. His practice consisted of family practice which included major and minor surgery, obstetrics, and general medicine for 45 years.

Dr. Sutherland was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph E. and Dorothy Peterson Sutherland; his wife, Mavis G. Savage Sutherland; one son, Corby Shaen Sutherland; two brothers, Edward A. Sutherland and Robert W. Sutherland; and one sister, Judy Moore.

He is survived by two daughters, Yolanda Elkins (Randy) of Oakland, TN and Heather Butterfield (Leslie) of Crestwood, KY; two sons, Christopher Sutherland (Kendra) of Westpoint, TN and Edward A. Sutherland (Carla) of Lawrenceburg, TN; two brothers, Duke Sutherland of Goodlettsville, TN and Dan Sutherland of Memphis, TN; two sisters, Donna Shell of Goodlettsville, TN and Angie Fusia of Atlanta, GA; thirteen grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
